As you get older, it’s natural to see an increase in skin laxity, looseness that is related to the loss of moisture, elasticity, and collagen. Laxity leads to lines, wrinkles and expression lines in your face, factors that contribute to premature aging. Robert Wielenga, MD, and the medical aesthetic specialists at Nouvé Med Spa in Downey, California, have several treatments at hand to help you tighten the skin on your face. As you age, it’s natural for your skin to lose collagen and elastin. This usually starts in your mid-20s, and you lose about 1% of tissue every year. Collagen and elastin, which are both in the middle dermis layer of your skin, provide support for the epidermis, or outer skin, in terms of moisture retention and nutrient supply, as well as filling out the volume of your skin layer.
Once the loss of collagen and elastin hits a certain point, your skin starts to dry and may begin to sag. The collagen matrix breaks down, and many facial lines result from the epidermis collapsing into the voids in the collagen layer. As its name implies, elastin helps skin to “snap back” to its original shape. With elastin loss, your skin doesn’t return to a tight, natural state after the muscles of your face move to create expressions.
In the past, a facelift with a plastic surgeon was the primary treatment. Because this is a surgical intervention, most people avoided it until the effects of aging were severe. However, new technologies emerged to address this laxity by triggering a controlled regenerative response in your body. Two of the primary care methods use cosmetic lasers and radio frequency equipment to stimulate this response.
Nouvé Med Spa uses Pellevé® for radio frequency treatment and the Cynosure® ICON™ laser system to treat sagging skin. While the core technology of each treatment is different, both systems create tighter skin by inducing heat into the dermis layer without affecting the outer skin.
When the collagen and elastin tissue warms to about 10 degrees above normal body levels, it reaches the coagulation point. The body recognizes that the collagen and elastin are damaged and begins to remove the tissue through the lymphatic system and bloodstream.
Simultaneously, the creation of new collagen and elastin begins a process that’s started by the Pellevé or ICON treatment.
Yes. Nouvé Med Spa also offers a treatment using surgical thread made of polydioxanone, the same material used for cardiac surgery. These threads have tiny cogs, so when they are placed laterally just under the surface of your skin, pulling them can literally tighten your skin. The threads also start the collagen response, and over time, the threads dissolve and get flushed from your body, while the facelift benefits remain.
